Creative Arts Therapy

What is Creative Arts Therapy?

At the heart of Creative Arts Therapy is expression. Using the arts for therapeutic purposes is a unique and powerful way to express our experiences. In creative process, we encounter images, thoughts, emotions and sensations that often surprise us and bring new insights and perspective to our situation.

Who is Creative Arts Therapy for?

This work is process-focused, rather than product-focused, which makes it appropriate for all levels of artistic skill and experience. I work with some clients who have no experience working creatively, while others are professional artists. No matter who you are, creative work can help you access parts of yourself that are hard to reach through discussion alone.

Drama Therapy

My training specialized in drama therapy. Drama therapy uses techniques from theatre for therapeutic purposes. This could mean looking at the roles you play in your life; telling your story in creative ways (and perhaps re-storying different outcomes); projecting your situations and challenges onto objects and small characters; rehearsing real-life situations; using found images to inspire writing; creating a personalized ritual... the possibilities are vast. Each activity is chosen based on what you’re comfortable with, what your therapy goals are, and what might truly help you.

My Practice

Drama therapy borrows heavily from other art modalities. In my practice, I often use drawing and other visual art techniques. I also borrow from dance/movement therapy, play therapy (when working with children), and elements of sandplay therapy. This work can also integrate nicely with Somatic Experiencing®.
